Technical superiority wins the day at Street
Reading Time: 3 minutesSeason has got off to a great start with some fantastic matches and players already in demand by clubs 1st teams
The match started a little late due to a problem unfurling the nets. But that was soon forgotten on a lovely warm evening at The Tannery Ground where two teams were champing at the bit to get started in this Division South match. Prior to the match Street had won both their opening matches but Ilminster Town had only grabbed a point from an away match at Frome Town. It was attack from both sides from the kick off with shots on goal testing both keepers Alex Leech for the home club and Harry Usher for Ilminster Town. Street made a sub after 4 mins following an injury but he rushed on eager to play. Ilminster Town pressed hard and Lucas Dawe had a fireball shot saved by the Street goalkeeper.
There were a large number of shots on goal mostly from Street and in one penetrating run Linus Wicki hit a 30m drive on 36 mins that curled inside the far post. There was nothing the keeper could do to stop it. 1-0 to Street at this stage. Both teams were good at recovering the ball when it had been lost – very well done.
Into the second half with both teams refreshed, it was the same as before – open attacking football using both wings to advantage. A beautiful cross from Streets’ Licki was floated across goal but failed to find a team mate. Street were now getting on top of the game partially through fitness and partly through more skill. However, Ilminster Town were adept at defending and didn’t really look like shipping further goals but as they had to defend for much of the time they had little chance to attack. Street finally put the match beyond Ilminster Town reach when Eli Kamesan scored. An exciting match played in an excellent spirit by both teams and officials. Well done.
The match was well refereed by young referee Freddie Bale. He had a good match with strong signals understood by players, coaches and spectators.
