CHAIRMAN REFLECTS ON 17 YEARS OF GROWTH FOR THE WCFYL

Western Counties Floodlight Youth League Chairman, Les Jordan, has shared his reflections on the journey the league has taken since he first became involved back in 2007.

Les started out as Secretary of Brislington U18s, attending his first league AGM at Winscombe FC. When then-chairman Roger Stone called for a volunteer vice-chairman, Les stepped forward — a decision that shaped the next 17 years of his footballing life.

“We had a small league back then, but our mission was to build from the ground up. With the committee members we had, we started to move forward and get youth players to join us,” Les explained.

After Roger’s passing, Les became chairman, supported by long-serving committee members including Richard Sloane (League Secretary) and Colin Waller. Together they strengthened the league, ensuring it was player-development focused, and introduced the Roger Stone Memorial Cup to honour the former chairman.

Today, the WCFYL has grown into a well-established competition covering Somerset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, and Devon, with four divisions and 35 member clubs. It has become widely recognised as a platform for young players to step into senior football.

Les was keen to pay tribute to the committee:

Richard Sloane, who has been League Secretary for 17 years, praised for his efficiency and dedication.

Tony Crook, Registration Secretary, who now manages over 1,400 player registrations each season.

Dave Green, Vice Chairman, always on hand to support.

He also thanked the many club U18 secretaries and officials across the league:

“It’s always the club officials who do the hard work to make sure players get the quality football they deserve. Our role is to provide the logistics, but it’s the clubs who make it happen.”

Concluding, Les said:

“I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve accomplished. I want to thank everyone who’s helped to make this possible. Long may it continue.”
